MAG Research & Development

Where Ideas are Transformed into Reality

Background and history of world-class inventor, scientist, and businessman Doug Magyari.

Born September 16, 1955, I grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan, a Detroit suburb where I still live today. My father was a hard working machinist who worked two jobs to support our family and provide adequate food, clothing and a warm home. I have an extreme passion for science, technology and business. I have always had that passion as far back as I can remember.

I acquired my business strategy and work ethic from my Grandfather who started Ryan Industries Inc. in 1936. He and his brother’s built their tool & die and manufacturing business (which they started in their basement), into an extremely successful Aerospace equipment manufacturer that was eventually bought by Textron in 1957. My grandfather believed in productive, honest, ethical work, and that anything was achievable if you put in the effort to make it so. This is how I have lived my life.

[Many years later (1974) I read the works of Ayn Rand. Her writings paralleled my view of the world, and what’s possible. It was refreshing to see someone else believe in, and write about the rational man. She became one of my heroes]

By the time I was 12, I could repair just about anything, a furnace, dishwasher, lawnmower or any household item.  My mindset was that, if someone was smart enough to build the item in the first place, I certainly would be smart enough to repair it.  So I advanced beyond cutting neighborhood lawns to earn money and went into business as the neighborhood repairman. That led me to owning my first car by the time I was 14, a derelict 1956 Chevy, which I took in trade from a divorced mother of six who owed me more money than she could pay.

By age 15, my love of cars was complete. I could fix anything on a car and I started to run experiments on the Chevy to see if I could improve its performance. I built my own spark plugs trying to improve combustion, and my own type of carburetor. I began to experiment with synthetic oils and alternative fuel sources in 1970, long before these things existed commercially.

From an early age I admired the great men that had built this great country and all of the marvels they had created. I learned that one man can and does make a difference. My heroes were people like Tom Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and George Westinghouse. I did not learn about Tesla until 1972, and then he was added to my list) I decided to become an inventor at age 9.  I realized this meant that school and learning will never stop, a fairly bold decision for a kid.  I am a lifetime student, and believe that people should never stop trying to make their dreams become a reality, and they should keep learning new things every day.

I also found out early that one can learn an incredible amount, in an incredibly short amount of time, by finding people who are experts in their field of interest who are willing to teach you.  I adopted that strategy when in grade school, and still use it today.

I started my second official business in 1969 while in high school, repairing cars.  Six years later (while attending Michigan State University) I started my research and development company, MAG Research & Development, which I still own more than 45 years later.

In the late 1970's I received my first of many patents. I patented an emission control system--one of two patents I hold for the steel industry.  This system captures waste gases produced in the coal-baking process, and prevents carcinogenic gases from leaking into the atmosphere. In 1979 I negotiated a multi-million dollar royalty contract with a major chemical company to produce and sell the compound.

To put myself through school I started a construction company in 1973.  I had picked up a lot of the construction trades as I was growing up hanging around development projects lending a hand.  This proved to be very useful and profitable, and I continued to support myself and my research efforts for many years doing construction.  I specialized in reclaiming, and sometimes repurposing, old buildings and homes.

I am a non-degreed mechanical engineer and an amateur musician with a passion for music and quality sound.  I formed a music production company in 1980, producing music for T.V., radio, film and commercial production.  I started designing recording studios and mix rooms in 1982.  In 1983 I designed and built the first digital mastering facility for the primary Motown duplicating facility in Madison Heights, Michigan.

I owned and operated my own recording studio from 1982 – 2002 working as a music producer, film producer, studio recording engineer and location recording engineer.  We developed an enormous client base with companies like General Motors, Ford Motor Co, Kelly Services and Kmart just to name a few.  While working with these clients, I recognized the need for more effective corporate wellness programs.  With my background in music and psychology we designed and built dozens of self-help audio programs.   I negotiated a royalty based contract to produce self improvement audio cassettes for an international distribution company.  This turned out to be a very profitable business decision, the products being sold both at retail, direct response TV and mail order.    The products we built became the #1 seller in Canada and # 3 in the United States.

In 1985 I invented a sleep aid product for children called The Original Rainbow Light™. It was featured in catalogs like Hammacher Schlemmer well before shopping carts and websites made items like this easy to sell.

In 1987 I invented a new type of microphone and method of capturing sound which allowed the listener to feel as if they were experiencing the event live when listened to on ordinary playback equipment. We called it the “Bird” Mic.  I did this research project on sound capturing because sound, in real-time, is experiential, not just a listening event, you feel it, it’s a whole brain function.  Traditional recordings capture the sound, but not the feel.  I knew if I could do this I could apply the technology to many industries, and especially help people break addictions and modify destructive behaviors.  This area of immersive training is a field that I have produced pioneering work with amazing results.

I started a company in 1987 called Visual Sound, Inc. based on this audio technology. That company then expanded into several additional companies; in 1991 I created Personal Growth Technologies, LLC and then in 1996 High Definition Audio Inc.

While I was working as a location recordist my interest in room acoustics was piqued.   Applying my knowledge in physics, mechanics and material sciences I invented the Golden Acoustics Sonic Distribution Panels, which balances the sonic energy in a room to create the most pleasing feel and clarity.  Golden Acoustics manufactures, sells and installs breakthrough sonic energy distribution products to major recording studios, performance halls and university classrooms in the U.S. and International markets.   Please visit www.goldenacoustics.com  for more information.

I continue to research and develop new sound treatment technologies and measurement techniques to enable the creation of the finest sounding rooms in the world. In 2018 I invented the world’s first non-particulate, full frequency, linear sound absorber. [Traditional sound absorption materials like fiberglass, mineral wool, and polymer foam products have potential health issues associated with them, but more importantly, they don’t work very well. They are extremely nonlinear in their performance.]

In 1996 I invented a new type of power transmission for cars and trucks called the Mag Trans.  It solves the problem of continuously variability while remaining mechanically engaged.  This solved the problem of low torque capability typically associated with CVT’s. This was thought to be impossible. The transmission is also inexpensive and lightweight compared to traditional transmissions.

Being from Detroit, cars are in my blood, I am a true gearhead.  I started building my own carburetors while I was in high school.  I continued that work into a very serious endeavor that lasted for decades, finally producing a device that will revolutionize the internal combustion engine.  I call it MAG UltraPhase.  It uses photons to sub-ambiently pre-condition the fuel prior to entering the combustion chamber. This enables the engine to convert virtually all of the caloric energy in the fuel to mechanical work, while producing only H2O and CO2 as a byproduct.

I started investigating how to create fresh water from salt water when my father moved to Florida in 1980.  I put serious effort into this global problem from 2002 to 2005.  I call the project Solar Pure.  My work continues, a practical solution must be found.

In 1999 I started thinking about how to add the visual cortex to my auditory organic methods of breaking addictive and distructive behaviour neural pathways.   In 2000, while we were helping companies reduce their health care costs by helping their employees make better choices with our "One-on-One" of audio products, the Boeing Corporation asked if we could help them reduce their time-loss accident claims.  It was a tremendous opportunity to take this pioneering work in the mind sciences to the next level, so I entered the world of 3D video, coupled to my High Definition Audio.  I knew at the time that that combination would ultimately change the world forever.  (Please see www.immyinc.com for further explanation of that technology).

For fun I built three more products around 2005 -2006. One is a new sport I call WaterGliding, a recreation device for cross country skiing on still water. I believe someday this will become an Olympic Sport.   I built an exercise device for strengthening the inner core called the AbRail, it enables anyone of any age to improve their physical condition. I also built a device for improving your golf swing called the Swing Finder. It utilizes the human ability to memorize and perform “song”. Once a human learns a song, it is remembered for a lifetime in every detail; - the order of notes, the duration of those notes, and the tempo of the notes. I converted the “Golf Swing” into a song.

I continue my work in many areas of interest, especially Energy, Matter, Atomic Theory and Time itself. The working title of my theory on Energy and Matter is called “Lens Theory”.

I am currently (2023) building a prototype of a better way of producing electricity by tapping the power of the atom non-radioactively. This uses the piezoelectric effect of certain crystals. I started the journey for finding a better way to produce electricity on December 25th, 1964. It has been a long journey. That was the day I decided to become an inventor.
